Goal of Baltimore Hydroponics is to educate about safely growing plants

With the legalization of recreational cannabis in Maryland, three friends decided to plant their seeds in Fells Point.

Julius Franks, Devin Melton and Donte Johnson are the owners of Baltimore Hydroponics, which teaches customers how to grow plants indoors.

"We provide the plants, the tents, lighting, all the equipment you need to do any kind of growing inside your home," Franks said. "With the cannabis plants, you're looking at, for flowering, 12 hours of interrupted darkness, 12 hours of light will get you results, but again, it will take you a couple of months to get there."

Their shop, which opens Friday, is often confused with being a dispensary.

"We do not provide or sell any THC or CBD products," Franks said. "We have young cannabis plants that do not have THC in them right now. But once you take them home and flower them, they'll develop THC."

Their goal is to educate about safely growing plants. Having had negative experiences with cannabis in the past, Melton hopes their hour-and-a-half-long class will weed out misinformation about what they do, and it's fulfilling a dream he never knew he had.

"I didn't think I was going to teach anybody anything," Melton said. "I didn't think I was going to have (a) business in Fells Point. So, coming together with these two gentlemen right here has been a match made in heaven, basically."

Their window plants often get many stops and stares from passersby. Planted on South Broadway in Fells Point, the native east-siders said they've become an unexpected tourist attraction.

"Everybody from every walk of life is into cannabis. Cannabis is truly a diverse product, if you will. (It) brings everybody together," Franks said.

They also grow edible vegetables with plans to feed those in need. Johnson hopes the fruits of their labor will inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs.

"We are showing proof that you can actually take whatever you're doing and make it legal," Johnson said. "You just have to understand and study the law, and once you look at the law, and understand the law, you navigate through that and make sure that your business is straight the same thing that we did."
